Here at TherapyFit, Sports Massage Therapy (SMT) is one of our most popular courses, this is due to the potential amount of money that can be earned with this qualification. This qualification requires no prerequisite, so it can be done by people with or without fitness qualifications, meaning it is potentially either an income stream by itself, or an additional income stream for a fitness professional. In this blog, I will focus more on it being an additional income stream for a fitness professional, but most of the points will be relevant to anyone looking to do the course with no other fitness qualifications.
Multiple income streams are becoming more and more necessary in modern society, and SMT is an exceptionally good one for fitness professionals to do. As a fitness professional, your income will change depending on multiple factors such as time of year, weather, inflation/cost of living/ etc, so having other income streams will lead to a more stable income, as well as simply earning more money overall. SMT allows this for two main reasons:
· Offering a new service to current customers
· Opening an entirely new customer market
So, let’s look at the first point above in some detail. As a fitness professional, either as a PT, gym instructor or group ex instructor, you will have client’s you work with regularly, especially as a PT. At current you may have in-person and/or an online client base whom you offer programming, nutrition advice, support, etc, and as with activity we know there can come aches, pains, and injuries. With an SMT qualification, you can add a new package to your client base, one that includes perhaps one sports massage each month to work out any knots or issues the client has incurred in their training. Also, perhaps you have clients that train competitively for an event, for example running a marathon, in which case a sports massage would be good for them pre-event to activate muscles, and post-event to facilitate recovery. SMT can also be relied more in months that personal training is quiet, for example during the festive period when PT is quiet, sports massage therapies can be sold to clients for themselves or as a gift card as a present.
Sports massage treatments can also be offered for different time allocations which would affect how much you charge. For example, if a client is only wanting a certain area to focus on (for example their back), or if they are wanting a full body massage, this will change the amount of time required to meet this need. Therefore, treatments can either be offered as a session, or at the end or beginning of a PT session (or both). For example, perhaps you have a client who is going to be doing an intense deadlifting session in the gym, before the session you could give the client a short treatment focusing on activating the necessary muscles and relaxing any tight or sore places the client has to get the most out of their deadlifting session. Then after the session, the client could get a more relaxing treatment to switch off their systems and get blood moving into the muscles to help facilitate recovery.
For the second point, sports massage can also open an entirely new customer market. If you are working in a gym or studio, where you offer sports massage, you can offer this service to members that are not your clients, as well as clients of other personal trainers to help them keep their clients fit and healthy, or members who do not get PT, and (depending on the gyms rules), you can also offer this service to people that are not members of the gym (this can also potentially bring more revenue to the gym as this new client may sign up to the gym, or just buy things when they are in). Also with sports massage, people who do not even train in a gym can use this service. With modern lifestyles, working in offices, sitting constantly, stress, etc, the human body takes a beating, and sports massage therapy is one way to help people with these daily issues.
Sports massage can also be a mobile business, whether you potentially have PT client you coach in their home or new SMT customers, if you have a massage bed and oil, you can offer this service anywhere, in people’s homes, workplaces or in different gyms/studios/etc. Massage beds tend to be portable, being foldable and having a carry bag, and oil is easy to transport, making this revenue stream easy to move to different sites.
There are many CPDs which can add to your income as a fitness professional, such as kettlebell instruction (which allows the professional to be able to offer kettlebell classes) or Pre and Postnatal fitness instruction (meaning the trainer can work with pregnant or postnatal women), however few offer the same potential revenue stream that sports massage can due to the versatility of the service, and also how much you can charge for each treatment.
